Our Historic Legacy
Our story began in 1936 as a restaurant on the Alaska Highway, feeding local miners and pioneers. By the 1950s, the site transformed into a brief ski destination before being abandoned in 1983. For forty years, the lodge stood as a quiet relic of the past until the Schuening Family revived it in 2023. This restoration was a true labor of love, dedicated to preserving the Alaskan spirit of outdoor grit.
Meet Hap Schuening
Led by Hap Schuening, our family took on the task of restoring Gunsight Mountain Lodge after it endured forty years of harsh Alaskan winters. We focused on reinforcing the structural integrity of the original building while integrating modern upgrades for guest comfort. By carefully preserving historic features and hand-crafting new interior details, we have revived this landmark to ensure it stands strong, offering a warm and authentic home for every visitor.
Our Convenience Store
Our convenience store features the historic building of Gunsight Mountain Lodge featuring a little bit of everything. Beverages, snacks, ice cream, grab-and-go hot food and baked goods, toys and games, fishing poles and tackle—even auto and mechanical essentials when life happens on the road or you’re just hanging out at camp.

Travel Tips
Essential information for travelers to Alaska
Flight Arrivals
Most travelers will arrive to either Fairbanks or Anchorage airport and will be along the most scenic and historic drive along the Glenn Highway.
Seasonal Access
Access to the lodge is year-round right off the Glenn Highway. Winter conditions can impact travel, so please check road conditions and advisories before you go.
Weather Readiness
Alaska's weather is unpredictable. Please pack layers and be prepared for sudden temperature shifts and potential snowfall.
